Fire Precautions Background

The Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations first came into force on 1 December 1997.

The regulations were amended by the Fire Precaution (Workplace) (Amendment) Regulations 1999 which came into force on the 1 December 1999. Combined with the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, they impose health and safety requirements for fire precautionary matters in the workplace. This includes shared areas and common parts of buildings e.g. corridors staircases and shared facilities.

Your regional fire and emergency planning authority are responsible for enforcing the fire regulations in the workplace. The Health and Safety Executive enforces the Health and Safety Act.
